Theme cakes...do you REALLY need one for your event?

Ok, I get that this is probably going to be a controversial post (especially to any custom baker friends out there), but hear me out. It's no secret I've stopped doing custom theme cakes, meaning I don't make cakes to match a certain event theme. I haven't ever really explained why, but I think you may find my reasons interesting!

So lets dive in! Do you REALLY need a cake that matches the theme of your event?

Want to know the short answer? It depends! Yep, that's my answer.

First, let's go through some reasons you may want/need a cake that is decorated to match a theme.

It's a wedding.

Generally, people want a wedding cake that matches their decor, because weddings are highly decorated events usually. For smaller, more intimate weddings though, this isn't a hard and fast rule.

You just love matching a theme.

There are people who love coordinating things and matching a theme. Some people really care, and if that's you, that's just fine!

Others just do it because that's the expectation. Because most home bakeries only do custom cakes, I think people feel like if they are ordering a cake from a home bakery that it HAS to be custom, and it HAS to match a theme, and that just isn't the case, not at my bakery at least!

I've had multiple cake customers ask for a "simple" cake and they didn't really care about a theme at all they just wanted it to be delicious, but because I was a custom baker at the time and didn't have a menu it was difficult to figure out how to help them.

Now lets talk about reasons why you may NOT want a custom cake for your event.

Actually, I'm just going to show you.

Let's say you're celebrating your friends 30th birthday at a nice steakhouse. Your job is to bring a delicious cake. Your friend loves chocolate, so you obviously need to bring a chocolate cake.

Which cake would you rather eat? Which cake makes you want to forget dinner and go straight for dessert?

Both these cakes are chocolate on the inside, but I think you will agree with me that one of them makes you want to dig in more, especially if you are a chocolate lover! (Side note-I did make both of these cakes, but the one on the right makes me think "pretty!" and the one on the left makes me want to go grab a fork!)

That's because we eat with our EYES before we eat with our mouths.

Our brain interprets a visual of chocolate, raspberries and chocolate curls as more delicious than purple and white frosting with flowers, even if we KNOW there's chocolate on the inside.

Not to mention chocolate ganache, fresh raspberries and chocolate curls ARE actually more delicious than colored vanilla frosting...but that's beside the point.

I have one last reason why I don't think you need a custom cake for every event, and that's because I want you to have my BEST.

When I was a custom baker, every time I made a design (with few exceptions) I was creating that cake for the first time.

The first time to EVER make that exact design.

I don't know about you, but I am not my 100% best at something the first time I do it, even if I have skills in that subject. Practice makes perfect, so when you order from my cake menu, you can rest assured you are getting my 100% best. Because you deserve it!

If you are somebody who prioritizes deliciousness on every level, you can order your next cake from me HERE.

What do YOU think? Does matching your celebration cake to a specific theme matter to you or not?
