Meet the baker behind Art+Flavor, your go-to place for macarons and cakes in the League City area

We are doing a little Q&A today to introduce myself and my business to you guys! I haven't done this since my brand refresh last year, so it's about time!

I run my bakery VERY differently than the other bakeries in League City/Dickinson, and so I wanted to answer some questions and highlight how exactly my bakery is different, and how this helps YOU get the very best cakes and macarons.

Question 1: What makes Art+Flavor Home Bakery different than other bakeries?


Answer: There's 3 big reasons I'm different than other bakeries.


First, I focus on treats that are sweet, but not overly so. I don't use any American buttercream (butter + powdered sugar) in any of my macarons and cakes, so my frostings are all silky smooth and less sugary. I put a lot of thought into the flavor combinations as well.


Second, I make really good macarons. My macarons are what I'm most well-known for. I've had customers tell me they are the best they've ever had, and even had one client tell me she couldn't find a better macaron in Paris when she went, which is a huge compliment.


Third, I specialize. I do cakes, cupcakes, and macarons. That's it. A lot of other bakeries do cakes, cupcakes, sugar cookies, flavored cookies, cake balls, macarons, and lots of other items!


And no judgment to them, because I also used to do that! When I did custom baking, I'd attempt to make just about anything a customer asked for, and usually it would be ok but not great. And there were plenty of late nights re-baking something because it didn't turn out right. I'm not about that life!


What I've realized is that focusing on a few things and really mastering them makes me a better baker AND I provide a really refined and consistent product each time because, well, I've done it a bunch of times before!

Question #2: Why did you start Art+Flavor?


Answer: I saw that there was a lack of flavor-focused baked treats in League City and Dickinson, and honestly even finding any macarons in this area is hard. There's plenty of places where you can get a pretty cake, but that isn't my focus.


I wanted to have a cake menu people can pick their cake and know that the flavor combinations and design of the cakes have all been thoughtfully put together.



Question #3: Why don't you do custom cakes?


Answer: My focus is on luxury and flavor, and to maximize that I have a menu of cakes that I have put a ton of work into testing and refining to bring that perfect combination of flavor, luxury and refinement without any of the "fluff" like fondant, gum paste, or other technically edible stuff that you still don't want to eat.

I also really feel there's this whole group of people who want a really delicious cake and they don't really care to have it match a theme.

For example, family birthdays at a restaurant or hosting a dinner party. You are looking for a homemade-from-scratch delicious cake, but basically your only option is a grocery store bakery, because home bakers all do custom around here.


If you use a custom baker, you have to pick the flavor and design and all that, so I've streamlined the process for these people. I've specifically curated these flavor combos to have some classic yet refined cakes, some fun, and some pushing the flavor envelope so to speak.

Besides, I want to give my BEST to every customer, and when each cake you do is different that gets hard because you are doing something new each time. With my cakes, you know that you are going to get a consistent product.


Question #4: What do you do when you aren't baking?

Answer: I'm a mom of 6 so mostly raising kids! I also really enjoy weightlifting so when I'm not baking you can find me at the gym.

I'm also a licensed Registered Dietitian (retired), which is sort of ironic since I bake sweets for a living...but everything in moderation, right?

Rachel, your treats are SO good. I never feel guilty after eating one of them because not a single moment or calorie of the eating is cheap. Your bakery is a gem!
